Alison O'Leary's book Abandon Ship (Hachette, 2023) will be an interesting topic for our club members.

While many World War II stories are told from the perspectives of male soldiers and sailors, Alison has several accounts from women who were aboard the Laconia when it was torpedoed by German U-boat 158 on September 12, 1942, 600 miles at sea. One in particular was 14 years old and traveling with her family. She had a very interesting life, and Alison was fortunate to locate her at age 95, still sharp and able to tell her stories.

About Author Alison O'Leary: A Massachusetts native, Alison is a graduate of Emerson College and author of outdoors, travel, and history books. She is an active freelance journalist, sailor, and outdoor adventurer.
